Image Credits

Dance photography from real performances is heavily copyrighted, and Ballet Modern has no affiliation with any of the choreographers or companies profiled here, so we only use photographs whose licenses allow it. That means two kinds of image: real photographs of choreographers, published under free licenses on Wikimedia Commons, and illustrative stock imagery everywhere else.

Photographs of Choreographers

These photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under the licenses shown. Each has been cropped to fit the page; cropped versions of photos licensed CC BY-SA are shared under the same license. The photographers and license holders are not affiliated with Ballet Modern and do not endorse it.

Photographs of Companies and Works

These photographs - of companies in performance, the theatres and studios they call home, and productions discussed on the site - also come from Wikimedia Commons and are used, cropped, under the licenses shown.

Illustrative Images

All other photographs on the site - the large images on pages where no freely licensed photo of the subject exists, and the images on cards and the homepage - are illustrative stock imagery from free-to-use libraries (Unsplash, Pexels, and Pixabay), used under each platform's free license, which permits commercial use without a per-image attribution requirement. None of them shows the actual production, dancer, or company discussed on the page; the large images are captioned "illustrative image", and every stock image's description says it is illustrative, to make that clear.
