Nederlands Dans Theater has opened its 2026-27 season under the motto "Move. Be Moved," and the program is dense with premieres. NDT 1 opens with Hofesh Shechter's Out of the Stillness, shown alongside a revival of Gabriela Carrizo's The Missing Door. Later in the season, Marcos Morau contributes GONE — his first full-length creation for the company, set to the music of Benjamin Clementine — and Marco Goecke closes it out with a new world premiere, Everywhere is here, paired with Christos Papadopoulos's Ties Unseen.
The season's most unusual entry, though, isn't in a theater at all. In October 2026, associate choreographer Crystal Pite premieres a new site-specific work inside the Collezione Maramotti museum in Reggio Emilia, Italy, danced by members of NDT 1 and her own company, Kidd Pivot. The piece is built in response to the museum's contemporary art collection and its galleries, rather than for a proscenium stage — a first for Pite at this scale.
Why It's Worth Watching
Pite's work for NDT and Kidd Pivot — Angels' Atlas, Flight Pattern, The Seasons' Canon — has largely lived on conventional stages, however unconventional its imagery. Moving into a museum's galleries removes the proscenium entirely, putting audiences inside the same architecture as the dancers and the art. Combined with full-length debuts from Morau and Goecke on the same season, it's a strong signal of how far NDT is willing to push its format.
